Douglas Kirkpatrick Smith

Douglas Kirkpatrick Smith, 89, of Cumming, died Oct. 21, 2012.

He was born in Webster Grove, Mo., on Jan. 5, 1923.

He was the son of the late Dallas and Louise Kirkpatrick Smith.

He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

He served in World War II as an artillery officer in the CBI.

After completing his education he moved to Atlanta where he served as vice president in charge of advertising and public relations at the First National Bank.

He was a volunteer with the Atlanta Boy Scout Council, which presented him with the Silver Beaver Award.

He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder.

For the past 40 years, he had been a resident of Cumming, where he renovated and lived in Burruss Mill.

In Cumming, he became a member of the Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church, the Rotary Club and the historical society.

He served a term on the board of The Place, a social service organization, the board of the Lake Lanier Association and served a term as president of the Atlanta Freight Bureau.

His wife of 60 years, Jane Wilcox Smith; son, Douglas Kirkpatrick Smith Jr.; and brother, Richard Allen Smith, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his son, R. Gray Smith and daughter-in-law, Kelley Smith; cousin, Nancy Louise Swearingen; sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard A. Smith; various other relatives also survive.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 27 at Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church. The family received friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations made to the Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church, 7620 Lanier Drive, Cumming, GA 30041.

McDonald and Son Funeral Home and Crematory of Cumming was in charge of the arrangements.
