Citizens to gather to pray for nation

POSTED: October 3, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Community members are invited to join in an open prayer session Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The "Heal Our Land Day of Prayer" will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the park's gym.

"All that we are asking people to do is come out and pray for our nation," said co-organizer Bill Minor.

"We believe in the power of prayer and we think our nation needs the guidance of God."

Planned to be nondenominational and nonpartisan, the event is "a labor of love" by various community members, said Dawson County Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Henson.

"We encourage people to reverently drop in and join in on the efforts to pray for our nation," she said.

The gathering will begin at 10 a.m. with a presentation of the national colors and an opening prayer. Afterward, people can come and go throughout the day.

The only requirement is "a prayerful mind and spirit," Minor said.

A letter of invitation was sent to more than 700 recipients, including churches in the counties of Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Hall, Lumpkin and Pickens. Local governmental officials and state legislators were also invited.

The event is based on 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
