A Dahlonega man arrested last month for impersonating an officer in neighboring Lumpkin County faces the same charge in Dawson County.

According to authorities, Donald Lee Hill portrayed himself as a border patrol agent with the Department of Homeland Security on several occasions between May 1 and July 1 to employees at a local pawn shop.

Dawson County Sheriff's Lt. Ray Goodie said investigators have "found no indications that he has ever been involved in law enforcement."

Hill, 52, was charged with a single count of impersonating an officer Sept. 12, nearly two weeks after Lumpkin County officials first arrested him on felony shoplifting.

He is being held at the Lumpkin County Jail.

Lumpkin County Sheriff's spokesman Wesley Burnett said the shoplifting charge sparked the investigation into the impersonation cases.

"There were also interviews with direct witnesses who said he presented himself to them as a border patrol agent," Burnett said.

"We've checked and been in contact with the federal division and they say he is not employed and has not been employed with the government."

In addition to shoplifting and impersonating an officer, Hill faces charges in Lumpkin of criminal trespass, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
