ASK THE EXPERTS

Youth take part in workshops

POSTED: August 8, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Three youth from the Dawson County Arts Council recently traveled to New York City to partake in teen-geared theatrical workshops.

Brittany Barron, Sean Newman and Taylor Priday have each ventured to the Big Apple for separate workshops held by iTheatrics, a company devoted to developing new shows for young performers.

Barron and Newman were selected as 2012 Junior Theatre Festival All-Star performers earlier this year and were offered the opportunity to attend the workshops without auditioning. Priday later auditioned and was accepted.

Barron was the first to attend a workshop last month, which focused on developing the musical "James and the Giant Peach Jr.," which is based on Roald Dahl's beloved novel.

Priday was later involved in developing "Shrek Jr.," a musical based on the hit Dreamworks animated film.

Sean, recipient of the Junior Theatre Festival Outstanding Male Performer award, is currently in New York City working on "Our House," a musical that won the Oliver Award and is based on the songs of the British band "Madness."

Marcia Chelf, director of Bowen Center for the Arts, said she is proud of the teens and looks forward to seeing what they bring back to the local youth theater program.

This fall the council will present "Honk Jr!," a tale based on Hans Christian Anderson's "The Ugly Duckling."

Auditions have concluded and cast lists will be posted soon. The show is expected to run Oct. 18-21.
