There are only 17 days until the beginning of the 2012 football season at Dawson County High School.

The Tigers are currently preparing for the opening on Aug. 17 against Towns County.

The game will only be a scrimmage but by that time Dawson County will be ready to hit somebody besides their own teammates.

"By the end of next week players will be ready to play against somebody else," said head coach Jeff Lee.

Fighting heat and humidity are common problems for any athletic team in July.

So far it seems the Tigers are fighting through the weather and are getting in quality practices.

"We have been fortunate to get real good weather the first couple of days last week. The wind really cooled things off," Lee said.

"I thought we had really good practices last week," he said. "Our guys are so far ahead and it helps that our guys have a lot of experience. We have great senior leadership and our players are real enthusiastic."

Last Thursday, the Tigers went through their drills like clockwork. There was a lot of encouragement from each team member during the two-hour practice.

"Both offense and defense have already put in about three quarters of what we plan on doing this season. Beginning mid-week we will start putting in the counter game on offense. The defense has a couple of new things to install. After that we will be ready to play," Lee said.

Training camp started today at the high school. The Tigers will practice tonight at 8 p.m.

On Saturday the team plans to scrimmage at 2 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. The time could change dependent on the weather, according to Lee.

The opening game of the 2012 season will be at home on Aug. 24 against East Hall. Kick off will be at 7:30 p.m.
