Young team goes to high school

POSTED: July 31, 2012 5:00 p.m.

Head coach Jessie Crane's Dawson County Middle School softball team attended a fundamental camp at Dawson County High School last week.

The camp instructors were varsity coaches Jimmy Pruett, Nickie Rogers and Mark Ragsdale.

"I really think our girls benefited from this camp. We will be using some of these fundamental drills during our practices," Crane said.

Crane said she has high hopes for this year's team.

"I expect great things this season. I have 13 girls that work very hard. We still have a lot to practice to be fully ready for our first game. I believe if the girls continue to work hard at practice and at home we could have a great season."

Crane said so far she has seen a strong work ethic from her team.

"I really think our girls are dedicated and wanting to improve every day," she said.

This year's roster will include: Seventh graders, Lauryn Antoun, Ashton Bryant, Caroline Collett, Karleigh Davenport, Lacy Mills, Elizabeth Morris and Karley Thurmond. Eighth graders: Kaila Billingsley, Heidi Collett, Natalie Glass, Jenna Lancaster, Sydney McGinnis and Carrie McPherson

Glass, McGinnis and Billingsley are returners from last year's team.

"These girls show leadership to the younger girls," Crane said.

The Lady Tigers will open the season on Aug. 14 at Clear Creek.

Dawson County will play its first home game on Aug. 17 against Jasper Middle School.

All games will begin at 4:30 p.m.
